Summer Solstice at Middle Woe
POSTED AT THE DOOR OF ALL HALLOWS CHURCH To the faithful of Middle Woe,
Following the observance of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, I feel it appropriate to offer a few gentle reminders concerning the previous evening's festivities.
The bonfires, whilst undoubtedly enthusiastic, were once again considerably larger than necessity required.
Mistress Agnes Nettlewood is reminded that whatever herbs she may choose to gather at midnight remain a matter between herself and her conscience. The Church has found it prudent to enquire no further into the matter and intends, God willing, to continue this policy.
It has also come to my attention that certain villagers have suggested I remained upon the hill until the third hour of the night.
I was not present.
Any resemblance between myself and the gentleman observed warming his hands beside the largest fire is entirely coincidental.
Finally, the geese were abroad throughout the night.
They have offered neither explanation nor apology.
May I remind all parishioners that the Feast of Saint John is a time of thanksgiving, fellowship and measured celebration.
Next year, perhaps, we might aim for slightly more of the former and rather less of the latter.
